Woo Remaking The Killer??!!

By Dr. Know on October 27th, 2015

Here’s some rather massive news: Hong Kong action maestro John Woo may possibly be remaking his 1989 action classic, The Killer!

While attending the Tokyo International Film Festival, Woo revealed to Screen Daily that The Killer remake will be his next project once he finishes up Manhunt, an adaptation of the Japanese novel Kimi Yo Fundo No Kawa No Watare by Juko Nishimura. The most interesting part of this news is the fact Woo may be returning to Hollywood to make this happen:

“I have never left [Hollywood]. I still enjoy working with Hollywood. I still have a couple of projects developing in Hollywood. So after Manhunt, I probably will go back to Hollywood to make another action thriller. I’m going to make The Killer in an American version.”

I’m on board all the way if Woo is at the helm!

This isn’t the first time a proposed remake of this property has made the rounds in La-La Land. Back in the ’90s it looked like Walter Hill (The Warriors, 48 Hrs) was going to direct, with Richard Gere and Denzel Washington starring.

Chow Yun-Fat starred in the original as a hitman who accidentally blinds a woman. Afterward, he vows to retire after one last hit so he can pay for her eye surgery. Naturally, a cagey police inspector, played by Danny Lee, is in hot pursuit throughout the entire movie.

It’s unclear at this stage how much of the narrative from the original will survive for the remake. Either way, I’m stoked for Woo to return to Hollywood!
