The Rock Is Black Adam!

In case you haven’t already heard, Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson has scored the role of Black Adam in the big screen version of Shazam. Johnson announced the big news this morning via Twitter:

Darren Lemke (Shooter) is penning the script, with a director and actor playing the title character still in question.

The comics followed a young tyke by the name of Billy Btason, Captain Marvel’s alter-ego. By uttering a single magic word young Billy Batson transforms himself into the world’s mightiest mortal, Captain Marvel. The acronym of the first letters of the names of the six elders who train Billy with their respective special gifts: Solomon, wisdom; Hercules, strength; Atlas, stamina; Zeus, power; Achilles, courage; and Mercury, speed, in a word…SHAZAM!

The villainous role of Black Adam is a major player in the Captain Marvel canon. He was initially a corrupted, ancient Egyptian predecessor of Captain Marvel, who fought his way to modern times to challenge the hero and his Marvel Family associates. Since the turn of the 21st century, however, Black Adam has been re-defined by DC Comics as a corrupted anti-hero seeking exoneration and redemption.

A production date hasn’t been set just yet, as Lemke has just been brought on to write yet another draft via development hell. Once a decent draft is delivered (and probably overhauled by a cavalcade of subsequent screenwriters), DC will eventually give this one a green light.
