The New Universal Monster Universe!
By Dr. Know on July 18th, 2014
Universal is looking to dust off their Universal Monster library once again; however, this time they’re not planning a bunch of sub-par stand-alone movies; the studio has enlisted the services of writer/producers Alex Kurtzman (Star Trek Into Darkness) and Chris Morgan (Fast & Furious franchise) to reboot things.
Meetings are apparently already underway to put together an interconnected slate of monster movies akin to the Marvel Universe. First on deck is a reboot of The Mummy, which will be released April 22, 2016. Part of the duo’s duties will be to work closely with production, marketing, promotions and consumer products to support the revival. They will also analyze projects which have pre-existing attachments, and bring it under one cohesive umbrella.
Morgan and Kurtzman won’t necessarily write all of the projects, if any, but they will undoubtedly have their fingers in each monster mash as producers in some way, shape or form.
A smart move, methinks. With the way Marvel has reshaped the Hollywood franchise template, Universal would be stupid not to follow suit, especially when you look at the incredible cast of characters in the Universal Monster library.
Stay tuned, as more on this revamp is sure to roll out in the coming months.
