By Dr. Know on March 12th, 2015

Some big news from the Star Wars universe today; at the Disney shareholder’s meeting today head honcho Bob Iger announced that  Star Wars: Episode VIII will hit theatres on May 26, 2017. Looper‘s Rian Johnson is, of course, writing and directing this one.

In addition to the next chapter in the new trilogy, Iger also said the first of the stand-alone spinoff movies, Star Wars: Rogue One, begins shooting this summer with Felicity Jones (The Theory of Everything).

Gareth Edwards (Godzilla) is directing Rogue One from a script by Gary Whitta (The Book of Eli) and Chris Weitz (About a Boy).

All said, this means there will be three Star Wars films between now and 2017.

As for Episode VII, it’s being directed by J.J. Abrams from a screenplay by Lawrence Kasdan and Abrams. Kathleen Kennedy, Abrams, and Bryan Burk are producing and John Williams returns as the composer. The movie opens worldwide on December 18, 2015.
