Phoenix Is Strange
By Dr. Know on July 26th, 2014
The latest Marvel rumor du jour concerns Joaquin Phoenix; apparently the thesp is in talks to take on the title role of Doctor Strange, which is set to be directed by Scott Derrickson. Naturally, at this early stage, Marvel and Phoenix’s reps have no comment on the matter, which is usually a good indication that things are indeed heading in this direction. If they weren’t they’d flat-out deny it.
Other rumored candidates for the starring role include Benedict Cumberbatch, Tom Hardy and Jared Leto; however, Phoenix is the first name to allegedly become the frontrunner.
Meanwhile, Prometheus screenwriter John Spaihts is currently rewriting previous drafts penned by Thomas Dean Donnelly and Joshua Oppenheimer (Conan the Barbarian, 2011).
Doctor Strange, who made his first appearance in the Marvel Universe more than 50 years ago in 1963, is a former neurosurgeon who serves as the Sorcerer Supreme — the primary protector of Earth against magical and mystical threats. The character was first created by Stan Lee and Steve Ditko in the pages of Strange Tales No. 110.
At present, Doctor Strange is scheduled to hit theaters July 8, 2016.
