UPDATE: Phantasm V Already In The Can?

By Dr. Know on March 25th, 2014

UPDATE via Shock Till You Drop:

Phantasm Archive says that this project has been in the works since 2008. They broke it down bullet point style:

  • The original working title for several years was “Reggie’s Tales.”
  • The original cast members put in appearances along with some Don Coscarelli regulars.
  • It was partly filmed in Crestline, CA at Reggie Bannister’s own home!
  • Many of the familiar series elements are back… the ‘Cuda and the sphere especially. Oh, yes… there will be blood!

They did not write this over at the site, but Phantasm Archives was able to confirm to me that none other than David Hartman wrote and directed Phantasm V: Ravager. Hartman is an artist who has done a ton of work for various studios and genre personalities like Rob Zombie. You can see his work here.

Don Coscarelli has been supervising the project.

Word has come down the wire this afternoon that not only is Phantasm V, aka Phantasm: Ravager, on the way, boils and ghouls, but it’s already in the can!!! If that’s so, that’s one hell of a revelation! I had no idea Don Coscarelli was even planning on returning to his old stomping grounds!

I can’t say if this news is definite or not, but Ryan Turek at Shock Till You Drop had the following to say on this under-the-wire sequel:

“I can tell you exclusively that the film has already been shot. That’s the rumbling I had heard for the last year now and recently had confirmed. The whole gang is back, too.”

Coscarelli? Scrimm? Bannister? Together again?

Cue Ode to Joy now, bitches!!

If this is true (I’m betting it is; Shock is usually right on the money), this obviously means the rights reverted back to Don Coscarelli after New Line failed to move on a potential remake close to a decade ago.

Back in those days, it looked like Roger Avary (The Rules of Attraction) was going to take a stab at things.  Clearly, it never happened, and I’m sure Avary’s legal troubles didn’t help matters.

A release date hasn’t been announced yet, but stay tuned; we’ll keep you up to date on the details as they roll in!
