Benedict Cumberbatch (Star Trek Into Darkness) is in talks to take on the title role in Marvel’s Doctor Strange. Cumberbatch is the latest in a long line of thespians rumored for the role.

Other rumored candidates for the starring role include Tom Hardy, Joaquin Phoenix and Jared Leto; however, Cumberbatch is the first one to enter into negotiations

Meanwhile, Prometheus screenwriter John Spaihts is the latest screenwriter to take a stab at the script, rewriting previous drafts penned by Thomas Dean Donnelly and Joshua Oppenheimer (Conan the Barbarian, 2011).

Scott Derrickson (Sinister) is, of course, attached to direct.

Doctor Strange, who made his first appearance in the Marvel Universe more than 50 years ago in 1963, is a former neurosurgeon who serves as the Sorcerer Supreme — the primary protector of Earth against magical and mystical threats. The character was first created by Stan Lee and Steve Ditko in the pages of Strange Tales No. 110.

At present, Doctor Strange is scheduled to hit theaters July 8, 2016.
