Is Denzel Magnificent?

Is Denzel Washington re-teaming with his Training Day and The Equalizer director, Antoine Fuqua, for a remake of The Magnificent Seven? According to Deadline MGM is anxious to put the duo back together, but, as usual, no one’s signed on the dotted line just yet.

True Detective screenwriter Nic Pizzolatto penned the most recent draft of the update, but I’d bet money the screenplay will be reworked to some degree if Washington and Fuqua jump on board.

The 1960 original was directed by John Sturges and starred Yul Brynner, Steve McQueen, Charles Bronson, James Coburn, Eli Wallach, Horst Buchholz, Brad Dexter and Robert Vaughn as a group of disparate gunmen who come together to protect a Mexican village from bandits. It led to a number of sequels as well as a CBS television series. It’s real inspiration, however, Akira Kurosawa’s 1954 immortal Seven Samurai.
