Paramount has finally started the ball rolling on G.I. Joe 3; they’ve hired screenwriter Jonathan Lemkin (Shooter, Lethal Weapon 4) to pen the first draft of the screenplay.

Plot details are obviously unavailable at the moment; however, word is producers want the movie to focus on Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson’s Roadblock. He became a became a fan favorite after being introduced in last year’s $370 million grossing sequel, G.I. Joe: Retaliation, will be returning and playing a major role in the third movie.

Initially, popular opinion was that G.I. Joe: Retaliation director Jon M. Chu would return for thirds, but as of press time he’s no longer attached to the project.

Lorenz di Bonaventura will produce once again.

At this early stage, the goal is to get the film into production by sometime next year for it to meet its 2016 release date.
