Does Star Trek III Have A Director?

By Dr. Know on April 22nd, 2014

The in-development Star Trek III may have its director in the form of screenwriter Roberto Orci, co-writer of the previous two Trek films directed by J.J. Abrams.

So where does this leave long-time writing and producing partner Alex Kurtzman? Well, it seems the two are parting ways (amicably, of course) to work on separate projects. Kurtzman is getting more and more involved with the Spider-Man franchise over at Sony (Orci and Kurtzman co-wrote The Amazing Spider-Man 2 and the pending 3), with designs on directing a Venom spin-off.

Although the two are taking different paths in their movie endeavors for now the duo plans to continue producing projects together for the boob tube.

Getting back to the still-untitled Star Trek III, nothing formal has been announced by Paramount and calls to Orci’s reps weren’t returned (total shocker); however, I’d be surprised if Orci didn’t sit in the director’s chair next. Word is he has J.J. Abrams’ blessing and Paramount isn’t known for taking risks. Chances are the studio will want a known quantity like Orci calling the shots. Even though he hasn’t directed a feature yet he’s produced plenty of the pics he’s written. His track record for success is well known to all in Tinseltown.
