Currently Watching: Milius

For those of you that may not be aware, John Milius is sort of a legend in Hollywood. The man is not only responsible for some of the greatest movies of all time, but he wrote some of the more memorable quotes in cinema history; he did uncredited script doctoring on Sudden Impact and wrote the infamous “Dirty” Harry Callahan tag-line, “Go ahead, make my day!”. He also penned Robert Shaw’s infamous U.S.S. Indianapolis speech in Jaws.
As a writer, Milius co-wrote Francis Ford Coppola’s Apocalypse Now, Dirty Harry (uncredited), Magnum Force (the first Dirty Harry sequel), The Wind and the Lion, Jeremiah Johnson, The Hunt for Red October (uncredited) and HBO’s Rome.
His directing credits include Dillinger, The Wind and the Lion, the Arnold Schwarzenegger-starring Conan the Barbarian, Red Dawn (the right-wing poster child for ’80s NRA) and Flight of the Intruder.
Always outspoken in not only his radical political views but also in his opinions of the hypocrisy in Hollywood, Milius’ career has cooled over the last twenty years due in large part to what many consider controversial behaviour. Furthermore, a stroke, which has robbed him of his ability to speak has only worsened matters.
Having said that, Milius is by no means down and out. He’s on the road to recovery. Although he has a long journey ahead of him he still has many irons in the fire, one of them a highly anticipated biopic of Genghis Khan.
