Cruise Has A New Mummy

By Drax Largo on January 21st, 2016

It’s official: Tom Cruise has signed on to Universal’s rehash of The Mummy. Into the bargain, the studio has cast Sofia Boutella (Kingsman: The Secret Service) as the title monster.

Now that Cruise and the creature are in place, the studio has shifted the release date from March 24, 2017 to June 9, 2017.

Alex Kurtzman – screenwriter and producer behind such blockbusters as Star Trek Into Darkness and The Amazing Spider-Man – is now in the director’s chair, with Chris Morgan (pick for Fast & Furious entry) producing.

Although Billy Ray (Captain Phillips) did an earlier pass at the screenplay, it appears John Spaihts (Prometheus) current draft is the script the production is moving ahead with. Of course, I’m sure director Kurtzman will do another rewrite (or at least another screenwriter will) before all is said and done.

Story details are being kept under wraps for now, but it is known the new movie will be a contemporary piece, unlike the horrendous Brendan Fraser series from the early 2000s. The plan is to tie the bandaged one in with the other Universal Monsters for an Avengers-like event movie.

Once again, The Mummy is scheduled for release on June 9, 2017.
