Avatar Sequels Delayed
By Dr. Know on January 14th, 2015
This should come as no surprise: the Avatar sequels – three of them – have been delayed by a year. Instead of the previously-expected release date of December 25, 2016, the first of the three will now make its bow on December 25, 2017. The pair of subsequent movies will then follow in December, 2018 and December, 2019.
Now, I’m sure the first reaction most have is that the production is in trouble. That was the buzz around director James Cameron’s The Abyss, Terminator 2: Judgment Day, Titanic and even the original Avatar. Look how great those movies turned out. Knowing Cameron it’s nothing more than his obsessive drive for perfection.
When talking to the Associated Press Cameron said, “There’s a layer of complexity in getting the story to work as a saga across three films that you don’t get when you’re making a stand-alone film.”
Rather vague but it’s just enough to hint at what Cameron has in store, something that will undoubtedly be epic.
Back in December, 2013 Fox announced there would be three more sequels and that Cameron had hired screenwriters Josh Friedman (War of the Worlds), Rick Jaffa & Amanda Silver (Rise of the Planets of the Apes), and Shane Salerno (Savages) to collaborate with Cameron on the screenplays. Clearly, even at that early stage, the trilogy was set to be a massive undertaking.
Once again, Avatar 2 is expected to be in theatres December, 25, 2017.
