AMMO CLIP: Techno-Babble

By Dr. Know on March 16th, 2013

In order for us to believe the impossible is possible in fantasy and sci-fi movies the characters often spend a lot of time getting us, the audience, up to speed on just what the hell is happening with lengthy chunks of dialogue-laden exposition. In a lot of cases, this means a load of techno-babble of the scientific variety.

The usually-sci-fi concepts are almost always a load of poop and the unusual jargon allows the characters to not only concisely convey ideas that may be confusing, misleading, or non-sensical but they also serve to plug up a load of plot holes and let them get away with just about anything.

I’m sure you can think of some right off the top of your head: the flux capacitor from Back to the Future, the phase plasma rifle from Babylon 5, or even the dilithium crystals from Star Trek.

Here are a few more examples posted below…if you get my meaning.
